Russia is about to start tapping into a huge source of diamonds that could supply the world market for the next 3,000 years.

Scientists estimate there are 'trillions of carats' lying beneath a 35million-year-old asteroid crater in Siberia - more than ten times the global stockpile.

The Kremlin has known about the reserves under the 62-mile-wide impact zone since the 1970s.

But it has kept it a secret until now because it was already reaping big profits in what back then was a heavily controlled market.

Our Sun is on a Collision Course with a Red Dwarf

 Extimundi.com states that our sun is on a collision course with a Red Dwarf labeled Gliese 710, traveling at nearly 50 times the speed of sound! Fortunately, Earth inhabitants won’t likely have to worry about it for at least the next million years since it would take about that long to get a half a light year away from us. Perhaps in the future of our species some highly evolved Tom Cruise type will somehow save the day and get the girl just in time. More than likely, by the time the Red Dwarf is any real threat we will all have long ago been doused in liquid nitrogen and smashed by sound waves.
Gleise 710 isn't the only star headed our way either. In fact, there are at least 8 other stars moving towards our solar system. Sure, most are only expected to come a little closer than the 4.3 light years away our current neighbor, Proxima Centauri waits; but there is always the possibility that these stars have planets orbiting them. Further, these planets may even have life on them! So perhaps these otherworldly stars aren't on a collision course with us, but rather we are on a collision course with them! It is even a possibility that on one of these planets right now, some alien science geek is writing an article about a star named "Sol" and its expected arrival in the future! A possibility that may sound way more like a sci-fi plot than an actual hypothesis, but as scientist and writer Isaac Asimov once wrote, "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today — but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all."

Moscow UFO sightings further confirm ‘working hypothesis’ of galactic governance council

The existence and information about the reported council of alien civilizations as a 'working hypothesis' based on evidence presented initially by the now deceased Stanley A Fulham, and now also by the former NATO-Spanish intelligence agent as another apparent communication channels of this same regional galactic governance council.

Since Stanley A. Fulham had accelerating pancreatic cancer in Nov. 2010, what seems to have occurred is that this interdimensional source stating it is representing the galactic governance council is now coming through other individuals with new information and predicted, confirmed UFO sightings.

The essence of the council's message is that in an extraordinary meeting around Jan 2010 (Earth time), members of the council met and determined to set aside the law of non-intervention, as it made a factual determination that the ecology of the Earth was on the verge of collapse and beyond the capability of human technology to forestall collapse and species extinction.

A leading atmospheric scientist, member of the U.N. IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change made the same evaluation of the Earth's ecology as on the verge of collapse to this reporter five years ago in an interview.

Accordingly, the council indicated it had made a decision to intervene with advanced technology (probably Pleiadean) by 2015 (if not before) and clean the atmosphere of the Earth. The council is also seeking to make a world speech explaining their ecological plan in 2014 (if not before). Both Mr. Fulham and the NATO-Spanish intelligence officer mentioned that their interdimensional sources indicated large-scale social, financial, governmental, etc changes would take place on the planet 2011-14.

From the available evidence, it would seem that the galactic governance council has the ability to identify and create credible sources for further information and updates (should all of this scenario be in fact true and authentic).

I would note the Mr. Fulham's book Challenges of Change is the product of 10 years of research and interaction with a council-connected source, and contains a blueprint of the council plan 2010-2015.

The Moscow UFO sightings and the USA-Russia ‘Conspiracy of Silence’

The January 2011 apparent galactic governance UFO sightings over Moscow Russia undescore an apparent determination by the ET council to break the USA-Russia ‘conspiracy of silence’ around the extraterrestrial presence and the dire danger that the Earth’s ecology and our Earthling human survival may be in, should this information be correct.

In his last communiqué on Dec. 3, 2010 before his untimely death, Stanley A. Fulham emphasized that breaking the conspiracy of silence by the U.S. and Russia on the extraterrestrial presence was a major goal of the galactic governance council.

A close associate of the now deceased Mr. Fulham on Jan. 12, 2011 sent the following advisory to this reporter Alfred Lambremont Webre:

“Stan mentioned he wasn't exactly sure for the longest time if the next event was going to be London or Paris, but after much deliberation, finally settled on London.

“He was hoping to have another reading with the Transcendors to try to "fine tune" a more exact date and place, but was too weak and ill.

Asking the key question

Is the 'Galactic Governance Council' - as demonstrated by the Fulham and Spanish NATO intelligence officer, and the 3 independent UFO sightings - a 'False Flag Operation," a Psyops, disinformation, random UFO sightings, or is this what it appears to be - an intervention by a galactic governance authority?

The above is a fair question that has been raised and continues to be raised about the Oct. 13, 2010 New York UFO sightings, Nov. 24, 2010 New York UFO sightings, and now the early Jan. 2011 Moscow, Russia UFO sightings.

Let us examine the various key aspects of the galactic governance authority intervention hypothesis to date.

In the absence of any other factors, and taking each of the the Oct. 13, 2010 New York UFO sightings, Nov. 24, 2010 New York UFO sightings, and now the early Jan. 2011 Moscow, Russia UFO sightings, a case could be made that each of these could be either random UFO sightings or an ET false flag operation, and not be part of an intentional, interdimensional intervention by an intelligent civilization that so announced itself beforehand.

But there are other factors to consider, notably the professional expertise of Stanley A. Fulham regarding extraterrestrial UFOs as a life-long NORAD officer who directed the NORAD radar that tracked ET UFOS across and around the North American continent.

2. The professional UFO expertise of NORAD officer Stanley A. Fulham and his 10 years interdimensional communication with the 'galactic governance council'

NORAD officer Stanley A. Fulham was exceptionally capable in being to recognize and track extraterrestrial UFO craft. Dr. Salla, for example omits mention of the giant pyramidal UFO craft parked over the Kremlin in Moscow Russia on Nov. 9, 2009 as part of a deliberate approach by a intelligent civilization, most plausibly the intelligence behind the 'galactic governance council' to put pressure on Russia. "He [Dr. Michael Salla] seems to forget it is winter in Moscow and unlike Hawaii, people don't sit around outside in their shorts watching sunsets, and where most of the media is still state-controlled and not free, and where the city is an armed military fortress and demonstrably quite hostile to an alien presence.

"Just how many good videos were there and still are coming out of Moscow? A dozen or more by now. If they don't measure up to what Dr. Salla's pre-conceived notions of what they should be like, let him go there and film for himself. How many good videos were there from NYC? None as far as I could tell, but thousands of eyewitnesses. The eyewitnesses, in the case of Moscow, can be more or less determined by the YouTube video hits, and they are in the many more thousands.

"Apparently, Dr. Salla is becoming more and more like those who want a piece of a UFO handed to them, personally."

In response to a critics of the Jan. 2011 Moscow, Russia UFO sightings, ranging from Boris of Exopolitics Germany who claims the Moscow UFOs may be helicopters to other who claim that Mr. Fulham may have been the subject of a MILAB operation, one Canadian UFO researcher close to the Stanley A. Fulham case sent this reporter the following statement.

Have you ever seen so many helicopters doing all this at night, ever? Have you ever seen a helicopter that looks even vaguely similar to a ball of light that changes colours and pulsates? And where is the noise of the rotors? Has Boris ever been outside at night in the winter? You can hear a pin drop from miles away in the dead of winter. No, its up to Boris to get down off his soap box claiming victory he debunked the videos because the videographer is simply ignoring his helicopter nonsense as anyone with any common sense would.

"The videographer is performing a public service; who is Boris to demand further proof? The videos are on the Internet and the videographer is well-known and respected in the Russian UFO community. Who is Boris to call the videographer and his videos a fraud. And who is he to judge what is "weak" having spent all of -- oh, maybe 15 minutes -- investigating the case, when the videographer is out there night after night actually doing actual worthwhile and valuable field work.

"Can Boris, being the amateur armchair Internet sleuth he is, find just one video of a helicopter that even remotely looks like and does the same things the UFOs are doing in the video? Just one? He makes demands on you to prove they are Extraterrestrial Vehicles, because he knows you can't, but neither can Boris prove they are helicopters. The standard of proof for someone living in Moscow who sees the videos on the Internet, and who saw the event from a closer perspective is to simply say they were there, and saw they were helicopters, and the videographer's credibility is gone. Poof! Up in smoke! Has this happened? No! Because they weren't helicopters, "Red Moscow helicopter" bunch.

"And with regard to the deleted video, Boris is claiming it is "weak" because its not there any more. I saw the video. So did you. I saw the disc. So did you. No longer being on-line actually bolsters the case for its authenticity, just the opposite of what Boris is trying to deceive others into believing. So just who is the one spreading disinformation? You and I know.

"As for Stan Fulham's possibly being "subject to psychological warfare with MILAB's and psychotronic weapon systems," as Anonymous 11 states [in the comments section of this article], statements so far detached from reality as that, don't actually deserve a response."

Accordingly, the Alien Council decided about three-weeks before their ‘display’ they would focus on one of our principal cities, New York. It is recognized worldwide as our most cosmopolitan city with a population not likely to be overwhelmed by the sight of UFOs; however, the ‘display’ date of 13 October 2010 would remain. There were other major UFO sightings on that date all over the world. But the Transcendors caution that they were not part of the Council’s principal focus over New York. The New York display is simply the beginning of the Alien’s “intervention process.”

The December 2010 UFO wave phenomena that occured in Russia does reasonably appear to be related to the extraterrestrial acclimitization process set out in dimensional communications from the regional galactic governance council, as published by Stanley A. Fulham in his book Challenges of Change and in his Dec. 3, 2010 statement.

Two paragraphs in Stanley Fulham’s Dec. 3, 2010 statement appear particularly relevant in this regard:

It seems reasonable that the December 2010 UFO wave over Russia – if the Russian government is a prime target of the regional galactiv governance authority in breaking ‘the conspiracy of silence’ by Russia and the U.S. over the extraterrestrial presence, and its intent to save the Earth’s ecology – is part of the new UFO waves predicted by Stanley A. Fulham prior to his untimely death from pancreatic cancer.

Scientists to create 3D Titanic

The wreck of the Titanic was located by a French and American team 

about 531 km southeast of Newfoundland, Canada, in September 1985.

Scientists are planning to map the entire wreckage site of the Titanic, 

creating a detailed and comprehensive 3D image of the transatlantic luxury liner.

A group of experts from various organizations will use cutting-edge robots, acoustic imaging, sonar technologies and high-resolution optical, video and 3D imaging to "virtually raise" the ship for the first time in the form of a reconstructed comprehensive detailed picture.

"About 40 percent we think, or maybe 50 percent, of the Titanic site has never been looked at," Reuters quoted co-expedition leader and director of special projects at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Dave Gallo, as saying.

"Everything to this point has been pretty much exploration, or adventure," he added saying that the project will be the first archeological work on the site which lies on the floor of the North Atlantic.

"We want to go into this area and understand where everything is and how it got there. It's going to be like the CSI of the underwater world."

Those interested in the subject can follow updates of the project at expeditiontitanic.com, while the History Channel is planning to broadcast a documentary on it.

Experts say that although raising the Titanic physically is also possible, the high cost and fragile nature of the ship make it extremely inadvisable.

"Very quickly, the ship is deteriorating more and more," said Paul-Henry Nargeolet, leader of the expedition and director of underwater research for RMS Titanic Inc., the only company with the right to recover objects from the wreck.

After leading five expeditions to the site, Nargeolet now expects much of the deck to collapse within the next 10 to 15 years.

"On the stern...between the engine the room...everything is collapsed already, including the hull itself."

Russia's Armageddon plan to save Earth from collision with asteroid

Space scientists in Russia are preparing to boldly go where no man has gone before, except for the actor Bruce Willis.
The head of the Russian space agency said today that it was considering a Hollywood-style mission to send a spacecraft to bump a large asteroid from a possible collision course with Earth.
Anatoly Perminov told the Russian radio station Golos Rossii: "People's lives are at stake. We should pay several hundred million dollars and build a system that would allow us to prevent a collision, rather than sit and wait for it to happen and kill hundreds of thousands of people."
The mission would be aimed at an asteroid called Apophis, he said, which is expected to pass close to the Earth in 2029 and again in 2036. "Calculations show that it's possible to create a special-purpose spacecraft within the time we have, which would help avoid the collision. The threat of collision can be averted."
The Hollywood action films Deep Impact and Armageddon both featured space missions scrambling to avert catastrophic collisions, the latter led by Willis.
But the creation of a system to deflect asteroids has long been the subject of scientific debate. Some experts have proposed sending a probe to circle around a dangerous asteroid and gradually change its trajectory. Others suggested sending a spacecraft to collide with it and alter its momentum, or using nuclear weapons.
Perminov said details of the project still needed to be worked out. But he said the agency would invite Nasa, the European Space Agency and others to participate.
When Apophis was discovered in 2004, astronomers made headlines when they said there was a one in 37 chance that the 350-metre-wide rock would collide with Earth in 2029. Further studies ruled out such an impact, but there remains a one in 250,000 chance it could strike in 2036.
Perminov said he had heard from a scientist that Apophis is getting closer and may hit the planet. "I don't remember exactly, but it seems to me it could hit the Earth by 2032," he said.
Nasa has estimated that if the asteroid hit the Earth, it would release more than 100,000 times the energy released in the nuclear blast over Hiroshima. Thousands of square miles would be directly affected by the blast but the whole of the Earth would see the effects of the dust released into the atmosphere.
Nasa experts have already discussed the option of landing an astronaut on an asteroid to test whether it could develop techniques to deflect a doomsday rock.
Breaking it up with an atomic warhead could generate thousands of smaller objects on a similar course, which could have time to re-form. Scientists agree the best approach, given enough time, would be to nudge the object into a safer orbit.
Matt Genge, a space researcher at Imperial College London, has calculated that something with the mass, acceleration and thrust of a small car could push an asteroid weighing a billion tonnes out of the path of Earth in just 75 days.
Perminov said: "We will soon hold a closed meeting of our collegium, the science-technical council, to look at what can be done. "There won't be any nuclear explosions. Everything will be done according to the laws of physics."
Mirrors, lights and even paint could change the way the object absorbed light and heat enough to shift its direction over 20 years or so. With less notice, mankind could be forced to take more drastic measures, such as setting off a massive explosion on or near the object to change its course.

News released today about a secret U.S. Government project to analyze an allegedly extraterrestrial craft has a unique twist.

This craft did not crash in 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico.

According to the anonymous sources, it crashed approximately 150 million years ago during the age of the dinosaurs.

This information has been posted on the SERPO.org Web site, home to other reports about extraterrestrial visitation reportedly provided by current and former officials of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The conduit for the information is Victor Martinez, the moderator of an e-mail “stream” information service that focuses on topics related to anomalous phenomena. Martinez has reportedly worked for several U.S. Government agencies.

In late 2005, Martinez wrote that these DIA sources had reached out to him to reveal information about “Project SERPO,” a later code name for a secret “exchange program” in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s between a small team of American military personnel and extraterrestrial visitors who had established contact with the U.S. Government.

Other information reportedly provided by these sources noted that the U.S. Government maintains records collected by both U.S. officials and a race of extraterrestrials that notes visitation to Earth in ancient times.

The most recent information report from the anonymous sources via Martinez makes the claim that “A highly classified, sensitive operation with far-reaching national security implications that took place in 1968.”

ET VISITATION IN DINOSAUR AGE

“A [redacted] archaeological team uncovered a large metallic object in a remote area of southern [redacted] which is a close NATO ally of ours,” according to Martinez’ anonymous sources.

The sources also reportedly told Martinez, “The object was believed to be an alien spacecraft that had crashed approximately 200 million years ago according to the archaeological team. The site subsequently was examined by a USAF recovery team, which then put the age of the alien craft at approximately 150 million years ago.”

As fantastic as this sounds, it is not inconsistent with other speculation that if extraterrestrial visitors have been coming to Earth in recent decades, it is possible they visited in previous centuries and in the far-distant past.

Martinez reports that his sources stated, “Our scientists used the absolute dating method employing decaying radioactive isotopes. Sedimentary rock formations and the fact that the object was embedded into the rock were used to estimate the age of the alien craft.”

“The alien craft itself was 45 feet in diameter,” the sources continued. “The craft was transported to the State of [redacted] and then to the giant [redacted] lab complex in [redacted] and opened.”

“The alien craft contained two highly decomposed alien bodies and decayed animals, which were apparently abducted by these alien beings. The animals were small dinosaurs on board the alien craft.”

ANALYZING THE CRAFT

Martinez states that his sources provided the following information: “The craft was stored at [redacted] and years of intense research were conducted. The last time I checked, the research team ruled out the craft being of Eben origin.”

“Eben” is a name allegedly given to an ET culture who have visited Earth from the Zeta Reticuli star system, were the group who crashed in Roswell and the beings with whom the U.S. shared the exchange program.

The anonymous sources allegedly added, “However, no one could tell where it came from. The alien bodies were far too decomposed to be thoroughly examined. They were about 5 feet tall and had very large, bulbous heads.”

“To the best of my knowledge, 'Operation [redacted]' is still an ongoing project. I personally worked on the operation in the early '70s.”

“The instruments from the craft were interesting because they were made of small crystal-like devices, wired together with a form of very fine wire.”

“The alien propulsion system contained a large chamber with what we called ‘rocks’ (obviously some form of energy) in the chamber. Large vents placed around the chamber vented some sort of power, radiation or some form of tremendous energy generated through the vents and into the propulsion chamber which enabled interstellar space travel.”

The anonymous sources claimed, “Examination of the rocks found zinc, and several unknown materials and alloys which we still cannot identify to this day. The ‘rocks’ obviously lost all of their energy over the years. They were not radioactive nor did they contain any special properties. We could never power up the alien craft in the nearly 40 years we've had possession of it.”

“We could not locate the actual power system and therefore could never operate any of the equipment contained within the craft. However, we did find a 'star chart.' The chart was created from outside of the Earth on the alien home world.”

“To this day, we have been unable to read and decipher the alien star chart. The star chart was of a deep area of space, but our scientists haven't been able to find that specific area of space.”

“ … the amazing … alien technology on this craft has similarly stumped us; while some progress has been made on it since 1968, it's been minimal (partially due to the poor, degraded condition of the alien craft).”

BOGGLES THE MIND

In the posting on SERPO.org and in his e-mail stream, Martinez and his anonymous sources reflect on the implications of what a discovery of this nature means.

“Anonymous” writes, “… the existence of alien civilizations who had already achieved space traveling capabilities zipping around the Milky Way Galaxy (and perhaps others) truly boggles the mind.”

“The Ebens were perhaps still in their ‘galactic diapers’ when these alien beings were already visiting other worlds –150-200 MYA [million years ago] and Homo sapiens did not even exist!”

“One can only wonder and speculate where a civilization – that had already achieved interstellar space travel – would be at today technologically from 150-200 MYA!"

Anonymous and Martinez continued their speculation with Anonymous allegedly stating: “How many star systems have they visited by now? How many other alien civilizations have they made successful contact and interacted with, and perhaps carry on some sort of trade with? How many solar systems have they visited and mapped out in our Milky Way Galaxy and perhaps those of other galaxies?”

“One also has to consider the possibility that rather than this crash having occurred in our timeline of 150-200 MYA, these alien beings traveled to Earth from the future to our distant past – when dinosaurs ruled – as part of a research mission ... that also boggles the mind!” Anonymous said, according to Martinez.

As with all of the Project SERPO information, this latest chapter will surely provoke discussion, doubts about its truthfulness and trigger the imaginations of many readers.

Is it true? Is it some kind of disinformation or phony claim? Is there some truth hidden within inaccurate information?

Is it part of an “acclimation” program to prepare Americans and the human race for the awareness of very interesting and surprising information?

At present, it is not possible for most readers to confirm the truthfulness of the statements Anonymous is reportedly making to Martinez and Martinez is passing on to the public.

What may be helpful for our perspectives, however, is considering that if extraterrestrial visitation to Earth is a reality, then it could have been occurring in time frames beyond what we might have previously thought.

On August 29, 1870, a 30-year-old Army lieutenant named Gustavus Doane, part of an exploratory expedition in the Yellowstone region in the territory of Wyoming, scrambled his way to the summit of Mount Washburn above the Yellowstone River. Looking to the south, he noticed that something was missing from a stretch of the Rocky Mountains: mountains. For miles and miles, the only elevations were in the distance, forming parentheses around a huge forested basin. Doane saw only one way to explain the void. "The great basin," he wrote, "has been formerly one vast crater of a now extinct volcano."

The lieutenant was right: Yellowstone is a volcano, and not just any volcano. The oldest, most famous national park in the United States sits squarely atop one of the biggest volcanoes on Earth. Doane was wrong, however, in one crucial respect. Yellowstone's volcano is not extinct. To an unsettling degree, it is very much alive.

There are volcanoes, and then there are supervolcanoes. The latter have no agreed-on definition—the term was popularized in a BBC documentary in 2000—but some scientists use it to describe explosions of exceptional violence and volume. The U.S. Geological Survey applies the term to any eruption ejecting more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of pumice and ash in a single event—more than 50 times the size of the infamous Krakatau eruption of 1883, which killed more than 36,000 people. Volcanoes form mountains; supervolcanoes erase them. Volcanoes kill plants and animals for miles around; supervolcanoes threaten whole species with extinction by changing the climate across the entire planet.

No supervolcano has erupted in recorded human history, but geologists have pieced together what an explosion must have been like. First, a plume of heat wells up from deep within the planet and melts rock just beneath the crust of the Earth, creating a vast chamber filled with a pressurized mix of magma, semisolid rock, and dissolved water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases. As additional magma accumulates in the chamber over thousands of years, the land above begins to dome upward by inches. Fractures open along the dome's edges, as if burglars were sawing a hole from beneath a wooden floor. When the pressure in the magma chamber is released through the fractures, the dissolved gases suddenly explode in a massive, runaway reaction. It's like "opening the Coke bottle after you've shaken it," says Bob Christiansen, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist who pioneered research on the Yellowstone volcano in the 1960s. With the magma chamber emptied, the surface collapses. The entire domed region simply falls into the planet, as though the Earth were consuming itself. Left behind is a giant caldera, from the Spanish word for "cauldron."

The "hot spot" responsible for the Yellowstone caldera has erupted dozens of times in the past, going back some 18 million years. Since the hot spot is rooted deep in the Earth, and the tectonic plate above it is moving southwest, ghostly calderas from the more ancient explosions are strung out like a series of gigantic beads across southern Idaho and into Oregon and Nevada, the subsequent lava flows forming the eerie moonscapes of the Snake River Plain.

The last three super-eruptions have been in Yellowstone itself. The most recent, 640,000 years ago, was a thousand times the size of the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980, which killed 57 people in Washington. But numbers do not capture the full scope of the mayhem. Scientists calculate that the pillar of ash from the Yellowstone explosion rose some 100,000 feet, leaving a layer of debris across the West all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Pyroclastic flows—dense, lethal fogs of ash, rocks, and gas, superheated to 1,470 degrees Fahrenheit—rolled across the landscape in towering gray clouds. The clouds filled entire valleys with hundreds of feet of material so hot and heavy that it welded itself like asphalt across the once verdant landscape. And this wasn't even Yellowstone's most violent moment. An eruption 2.1 million years ago was more than twice as strong, leaving a hole in the ground the size of Rhode Island. In between, 1.3 million years ago, was a smaller but still devastating eruption.

Each time, the whole planet would have felt the effects. Gases rising high into the stratosphere would have mixed with water vapor to create a thin haze of sulfate aerosols that dimmed sunlight, potentially plunging the Earth into years of "volcanic winter." According to some researchers, the DNA of our own species may pay witness to such a catastrophe around 74,000 years ago, when a supervolcano called Toba erupted in Indonesia. The ensuing volcanic winter may have contributed to a period of global cooling that reduced the entire human population to a few thousand individuals—a close shave for the human race.

For all their violence, the supervolcanoes have left little behind beyond a faintly perceptible sense of absence. The Yellowstone caldera has been eroded, filled in with lava flows and ash from smaller eruptions (the most recent was 70,000 years ago) and smoothed by glaciers. Peaceful forests cover any lingering scars. The combined effect makes it almost impossible to detect, unless you've got a good eye, like Doane had, or a geologist whispering in your ear.

"You're seeing two-thirds of the entire caldera," says Bob Smith. "The size is so immense that people don't appreciate it." Smith is a University of Utah geophysicist and a prominent expert on the supervolcano at Yellowstone. We're standing atop Lake Butte, an overlook at the east end of Yellowstone Lake, one of the best places to see the caldera. But I don't see it. I can see the lake spread out for miles beneath us and a few little hills to the north—old lava domes. But I can't follow the caldera rim visually because much of it is beneath the lake and because of the sheer scale of the thing—roughly 45 miles across. Like Doane atop Mount Washburn, I see only distant mountains on the hori­zon on either side and between them, to the west, the "unmountains," the emptiness where the land swallowed itself in the course of a few days.

The effects of the past eruptions are nevertheless profoundly felt in the present. The lodgepole pines that dominate the park's forests are adapted to growing in nutrient-poor soils, like those in the Yellowstone caldera. So too are the white­bark pines, whose nuts sustain grizzlies and black bears.

And of course, the land to this day is literally boiling over. The trout that riot in the rivers would not be so abundant without the warming effects of the hydrothermal springs at the bottom of frigid Yellowstone Lake. The park roils with geysers, fumaroles, mud volcanoes, and other hydrothermal activity. Half the geysers on the planet are in Yellowstone. The hydrothermal features change constantly in temperature and behavior, with new ones popping up in the forests, spewing clouds of steam visible from airplanes, exuding vapors that have been known to kill bison on the spot.

In spite of this "most violent gaseous ebullition," as one early explorer put it, the volcano beneath Yellowstone was long thought to be extinct, as Doane believed, or at least in its dying days. Indeed, after federal surveys in the late 19th century, the volcanic nature of Yellowstone received little scientific scrutiny for dec­ades. Then in the late 1950s, a young Harvard graduate student, Francis "Joe" Boyd, became intrigued by the presence of a welded tuff—a thick layer of heated and compacted ash, which he realized was a sign of pyroclastic flows from an explosive, geologically recent eruption.

In 1965 Bob Christiansen found a second distinct welded tuff; the next year he and his colleagues identified a third. Using potassium-argon dating, they determined that the three tuffs were the result of three dis­tinct eruptions. Each created a giant caldera, with the most recent eruption largely burying signs of the previous two.

Then one day in 1973, Bob Smith and a colleague were doing some work on Peale Island, in the South Arm of Yellowstone Lake, when Smith noticed something odd: Some trees along the shoreline were partially submerged and dying. He had worked in the area back in 1956 and was planning to use the same boat dock as on the earlier trip. But the dock was also inundated. What was going on?

Intrigued, Smith set out to resurvey benchmarks that park workers had placed on various roads throughout the park beginning in 1923. His survey revealed that the Hayden Valley, which sits atop the caldera to the north of the lake, had risen by some 30 inches over the inter­vening decades. But the lower end of the lake hadn't risen at all. In effect, the north end of the lake had risen and tipped water down into the southern end. The ground was doming. The volcano was alive.

Smith published his results in 1979, referring in interviews to Yellowstone as "the living, breathing caldera." Then in 1985, heralded by a "swarm" of mostly tiny earthquakes, the terrain subsided again. Smith modified his metaphor: Yellowstone was now the "living, breathing, shaking caldera."

In the years since, Smith and his colleagues have used every trick they can devise to "see" beneath the park. Gradually, the proportions and potential of the subterranean volcanic system have emerged. At the shallowest level, surface water percolates several miles into the crust, is heated, and boils back up, supplying the geysers and fumaroles. About five to seven miles deep is the top of the magma chamber, a reservoir of partially melted rock roughly 30 miles wide. Basaltic magma is trapped inside the chamber by denser, overlying rhyolitic magma, which floats on top of the liquid basalt like cream on milk. By looking at the way sound waves created by earthquakes propagate through subsurface rock of varying densities, the scientists have discovered that the magma chamber is fed by a gigantic plume of hot rock, rising from the Earth's upper mantle, tilted downward to the northwest by 60 degrees, its base per­haps 400 miles below the surface. When the plume pumps more heat into the chamber, the land heaves upward. Small earthquakes allow hydro­thermal fluids to escape to the surface, easing the pressure inside the chamber, which causes the ground to subside again. After the 1985 earthquake swarm, Yellowstone fell eight inches over the course of a decade or so. Then it rose again, faster this time. Since 2004, portions of the caldera have surged upward at a rate of nearly three inches a year, much faster than any uplift since close observations began in the 1970s. The surface continues to rise despite an 11-day earthquake swarm that began late in 2008, causing a flurry of apocalyptic rumors on the Internet.

"We call this a caldera at unrest," Smith says. "The net effect over many cycles is to finally get enough magma to erupt. And we don't know what those cycles are."

So, the colossal question: Is it going to blow again? Some kind of eruption—perhaps a modest one like Mount Pinatubo's in the Philippines, which killed 800 people in 1991—is highly likely at some point. The odds of a full, caldera-forming eruption—a cataclysm that could kill untold thousands of people and plunge the Earth into a volcanic winter—are anyone's guess; it could happen in our lifetimes, or 100,000 years or more from now, or perhaps never. Bob Christian­sen, now retired, suspects the supervolcano may be safely bottled up. For most of its history, the Yellowstone hot spot has formed calderas in the thin crust of the Basin and Range area of the American West. Now the hot spot is lodged beneath a much thicker crust at the crest of the Rockies.

"I think that the system has more or less equilibrated itself," says Christian­sen. Then he quickly adds, "But that's an interpretation that would not stand up in court."
